Valentine’s — Think Outside the Box

A few facts about red roses.

About 8 million are flown into Heathrow in February just for Valentines day. They have been grown with more pesticides than many other stems to get them ready for this artificial bloom date, they have been flown from Kenya and Netherlands. This has a massive carbon foot print.

I’m not saying that it is wrong to get flowers from Holland, I often order from there but my orders come over by boat and I always order what is in season. The winter is not the time for British flowers.

Why not think about alternatives for this Valentines day — hellebores, tulips and anemones would make a gorgeous bouquet, or a potted hyacinth would smell divine.

Think outside the box this year when sending a message of love. Whether it is Valentine’s or Galentine’s, let’s also think about the planet.
